The Remarkable Paper Craft of Raya Sader Bujana

RAYA

Paper artist and set designer Raya Sager Bujana is no stranger to working in detail. The Barcelona based artist creates beautifully detailed pieces from precisely cut paper, layered and laid out to create depth and movement. Now, in a collaboration with photographer Leo Garcia Mendez, the artist has created a series of paper crafted athletes that are created using up to 150 sheets of paper per figure.

Bujana begins each figure in the project, a stock photo shoot to promote the recent Summer Games, the same way, drawing on her experience as an architect to create unbelievable detail. Once it is drafted, the artist digitizes each image to make the final adjustments, and then painstakingly assembles each figure using 3mm separators for shape.

“The whole concept of this design was to express movement using paper,” the Artist explains, “The added texture, light and volume that the technique provides reinforces the fluidity of the pieces.”
