Suzanne Heintz and Her Mannequin Family

Photographer and art director Suzanne Heintz was baffled by the amount of people concerned that she wasn’t married yet. She grew tired of hearing the same “Why aren’t you married” question over and over, but rather than settling for a husband, she set out to define her own ideal family life.

Embarking on a 10,000-mile journey over 14 years, taking with her one camera and two mannequins as companions, Heintz began taking the family portraits in front of iconic international tourist destinations that would ultimately become her Life Once Removed photo series.

However, Heintz’s portraits with her plastic family weren’t just taken without reason. The artist explains that, “I have the right to decide how my life looks”, whether it includes a human husband and family or not.
