A study conducted by the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine and Queen Mary, University of London in 2011 showed that one in six cellphones were contaminated with E. coli, a potentially illness-causing bacteria that is found in fecal matter.

Yep, that’s right. There is a 16.67% chance that your phone is covered in poop.

The reason is simply that most people still don’t wash their hands after using the bathroom. E. coli can survive for hours on any given surface and it breeds in warm conditions. This means that you’re not only spreading bacteria to your phone, but all around you: your keyboard, door handles, shopping carts, the list is endless. And even if you go back and wash your hands the next time you use the bathroom, your phone is still dirty so you’ll just contaminate yourself again.

This probably won’t surprise you: “In previous studies, we found that men’s hands were more contaminated than women’s, and also that men wash hands less often than women in public restrooms, ” says Dr. Val Curtis of the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine.

But there’s hope for you and your contaminated phone, we promise.

A company called PhoneSoap has produced a line of products designed to disinfect your phone, including a charger that will sanitize your phone while it charges.

The PhoneSoap charger uses an ultraviolet radiation light to clean your phone; specifically a UV-C light, which is the germicidal UV wavelength, shorter than UV-A or B. This type of UV radiation is typically used in hospital sanitation and sterile work facilities. We don’t see UV-C on Earth because our atmosphere blocks it since it would be harmful to our eyes, but PhoneSoap claims that the sanitation process happens within the charger’s controlled environment and users will never see the UV light in action. An external blue light will let you know when your device is being disinfected and when to open the box.

The PhoneSoap charger goes for $49.95, plus shipping and can be purchased here.
