Modern Sculptural Fish Tanks Bring Art Into Your Home

In their own right, fishtanks are beautiful things. The soft lighting, the sounds of water idly moving, the mesmerizing movement of fish; all of these soothing qualities have made fishtanks a popular feature in many homes. However, unless your budget is large enough to include custom tank decoration, keeping a beautiful tank that is also minimal is not an easy feat to accomplish. To change that, a Japanese studio, Misawa Design Institute, combined the popular aesthetic of modern sculptural art into fishtanks, making them living seascapes, and sculptural works of art.

Designer Haruka Misawa explained at the inception of the project, that the concept was based on “creating an interaction between gravity and buoyancy”. To that end, this collection of amazing fish tanks, entitled Waterscape, are minimally decorated with various geometric structures that are both made of glass and 3D-printed. These structure include small islands of air floating within the tank itself and veils of 3D-printed materials organically draped in the tank.

While these tanks aren’t readily available for purchase, they can serve as an inspiration for fish enthusiasts looking to make an impact with their own tanks. The simplicity of these pieces make them highly replicate-able, although their individual design ensures that each new incarnation will be unique to its creator and the tanks’ intended inhabitants.
