Recently, when physicist Benjamin Burch’s nine-year-old son approached him to make a lightsaber for a science experiment, the dad-of-the-year shoe-in jumped at the chance to give his kid a hands-on project that he could complete at his level.

The lightsaber calls for a few simple pieces, most of which can be purchased at a hobby shop or online and is easy enough that Burch’s children were able to handle much of the assembly themselves. Check out his website for the tutorial on how he put it all together.

So we’re going to go ahead and pretend that the reason this post is relevant is because Halloween is right around the corner, but we all know that any excuse to make a lightsaber is a good excuse, especially when you can do it for less than $20.
