Joshua Hoffine is interested in the psychology of fear.

He has been shooting his elaborately staged “Horror photographs” since 2003, but his photography didn’t take off until 2008 when he began a website featuring images that explored the nature of childhood fears.

Using primarily his own children as his models, Hoffine stages his shoots like mini-movie sets with costumes and special effects makeup, doing everything possible for the viewer to see the world as a child sees their nightmares.

“I want the viewer to share their point of view, to feel their sense of vulnerability. The images stress danger and depict a world where innocence and safety are under constant threat,” Hoffine explains.

His photography reminds us of how real our fear of monsters seemed to us as children, even if our monsters have now taken new forms.
