Guiding Light To The Stars

There are precious few things in the universe that are as breathtakingly beautiful as the universe itself. The 5th annual Astronomy Photographer of the Year competition held by the Royal Observatory Greenwich just announced the winners of 2012, and that gorgeous, Australian scene you see above was proclaimed the overall winner. Participants enter the competition from all over the world (some of which are only 10 and 14 years old) amassing an incredible 1, 200 entries and their photography captures everything from the transit of Venus and comets to nebulae and aurorae. Take a gander at 11 of the most impressive shots from the competition here, or if you’re feeling cosmically inclined, peruse more photos from Royal Museums Greenwich’s site here.
