Frederik de Wilde is neither artist nor scientist, but a creator that lives in the magnificent in-between of both worlds.

Working with carbon nanotubes, Wilde has created the world’s darkest “color, ” a nano particle-based material that completely absorbs light.

As Wilde explains in his TED talk below, although we conceive of black as the color that’s generated through the mixing of several pigments, when generated as light, black is actually not a color because it does not emit light photons.

Wilde has spent the last four years creating and manipulating his carbon nanotubes with Rice University in Houston, Texas. Since his process is so intricate, we figure we’ll let him tell you about it himself.

Wilde uses his black-hole-like art supplies to coat his warped 3D sculptures, but his carbon nanotubes could potentially be used to decrease global warming and augment photosynthesis.
